famous people

saturday is the big improvolympic 25th anniversary show at the chicago theatre, and the animal club has scored backstage passes. we're all volunteering to be handlers and assistants and what not, so we get to work at the show and hang out at the after party. prepare yourself for a lot of name dropping on sundays blog. maybe, if we're all good, ruth will favor us with a report of what it's like to hang out with mike myers, as she is his handler for the night.

Sooooo.... How'd this go from your end? (I've heard how it went from some other ends.)

well...i've been a part of tech disasters before (obviously nothing on this scale), and i don't think much in life hurts as bad. being only semi-connected to this as "my" event dulled the pain somewhat, and i can't imagine what the producers must have felt like.

for the record, the audio work was subcontracted out, and they decied to go with wireless lavs instead of miking the stage, which i thought held great potential for problems. somnething went wrong on the mixer/channel/frequency level, and most of the wireless mics were dead- no backup was ready, no sound check had been performed. it was a fuckup of monumental standards, and the audience wasn't entirely forgiving (nor should they have been at $75 a pop).

still, the experience for me and the performers was valuable, and there were more than a few performers who thought the mayhem was del close's way of fucking with everyone from beyond the grave.

the backstage moments were pretty great- as we were running around trying to put out fires directly related to the microphone problem, mike myers grabbed us and said "i think i figured out the mikes", having taken his lav mike out from his shirt and taped it to his lower lip. i'll probably break the whole thing down into small pieces for the blog, because it's definately something i want to express in detail.

i'm still trying to put it all in order. there was a lot to take in. one thing is for sure though, it's going to be a rough week at the office. and if the celebs weren't so fucking cool, it would be a lot rougher.

and you can tell ali that he absolutely killed. he and amy poehler had one of the best runs of the night, and rumor has it it was completely audible.
