The Scent Of A Phonecall

Not sure if this is possible. But, today at work, I answered the phone and could have sworn that I picked up a whiff of the guy on the other end's after shave. I shit you not. After I hung up, I immediately stuck the receiver directly under my nostrils and sniffed multiple times and found no such scent and no scent at all save cold black plastic. Could this scent transaction have occured or is it just my mind playing tricks on me?
